Physics: The Simple Pendulum
Pendulum Project

Ballistic Pendulum VideoA classic physics lab with an impressive military history, the ballistics pendulum was invented in 1742 to measure the speed of bullets. It was later discovered that by knowing the weight of the pendulum, the weight of the shot fired and the distance the pendulum moved when struck, you then can calculate the velocity of the shot. Lead students in recreating this experiment to demonstrate conservation of energy, conservation of momentum and projectile motion. The pendulum consists of a spring gun, a ball that can be launched horizontally and a block to catch the ball. The pendulum swings to a maximum height where it is stopped. By measuring this height and using conservation of mechanical energy students can deduce the kinetic energy of the pendulum plus projectile immediately after they collide. A scale and pointer indicate the highest arc of the swing for accurate measurements every time. Includes instructions.
